Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Sam Fisher is back for more espionage and intrigue in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. All the nail biting about whether to go in "hot" with guns blazing, or to use stealth is back in this new version, plus some amazing improvements. Chaos Theory ups the ante with vastly improved graphics, totally open level design, and coop gameplay. Fresh from the East Timor operations, Fisher is now put on the front lines of information warfare. The year is 2008 and the world is suffering from citywide blackouts, stock exchange sabotage, and electronic hijacking of national defense systems. The stakes are high and Fisher, as the NSA's most elite black-ops agent, is inserted in operations to aggressively gather intelligence. A wide range of missions call on a lethal mixture of weapons and close range combat. While Chaos Theory demands the same agility and athleticism required in previous Splinter Cell incarnations, some new weapons, gadgets and moves are available, such as the prototype Land Warrior rifle, and the stealthy, but oh-so-deadly inverted neck break.

In addition to an improved graphics engine, physics are enhanced, too. Enhancements like rag doll physics, particle effects, and realistic interaction with the environment make the Splinter Cell experience more immersive than ever. Just as judging your environment was crucial in past Splinter Cell games, Chaos Theory demands that you understand the delicate balance between light and shadow to stay alive.

Chaos Theory offers great replayability in single player mode, thanks to its vast, open level design. There's always more than one way to achieve your objectives. At the beginning of each mission you are given your objectives, but you must choose how to go about completing them. Decisions about stealth versus conflict are yours to make, too. Should you enter a mission with non-lethal weaponry, a host of guns and ammo, or a little bit of both? You decide.

The Splinter Cell franchise is known for its tense, stealth-driven multi-player modes, and Chaos Theory is no exception. This version adds unique cooperative modes where you and your teammates must complete infiltration missions. Try to keep each other alive. Try to thrive in the dark and strike when the moment is right.

Silent Storm
Silent Storm is a turn-based WWII game that's heavy on tactics and team-management. You're in control of an elite corps of specialists for use on missions to destroy, sabotage, and perform reconnaissance against the Axis (or Allied) forces on the European front. You can create your team from a field of 40 male and female operatives from a variety of nationalities.

The action takes place on 3-D battlefields, and there's lots of stuff you can blow up and interact with. The developers went all out making sure each battlefield offers a lot to do, the enemy artificial intelligence is sharp, and each mission can be approached in any way you see fit. You can choose a well-rounded team, a stealth based group, or a bunch of Rambo-types out for carnage.

There's no multiplayer, but the fun campaign can be played from either side, and, given the personality and operative choices, there's a lot of replay value to be enjoyed. WWII tactical strategy games don't get much better than this. If you're a strategy fan, better enlist now. --Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • A wide range of unique operatives
  • Total freedom of strategy across non-linear missions
Cons:
  • No multiplayer

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
In this new Tom Clancy franchise, you take command of the Ghosts, an elite squad of military personnel equipped with the latest experimental real-world weaponry. Wherever there is military conflict, the Ghosts are the first on the ground.

Russia has fallen under the control of ultranationalistic politicians intent on rebuilding the iron curtain. This leads to conflict with NATO as Russia attempts to reclaim the breakaway Republic of Georgia, and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. As the regional wars escalate out of control, the casualties mount and the Ghosts are sent in. Take command of the Ghosts through a series of missions that range from demolitions to search and rescues to all-out firefights.

Delta Force Land Warrior
This third chapter of the popular first-person tactical combat series takes full advantage of 3-D acceleration. The 3-D graphics help create highly detailed interior environments. The creators were certain, however, to make sure the long-range combat, one of the hallmarks of the series, remained intact. Snipers can still hit opponents from 1,000 meters or more, which is important because a single shot will usually take you out.

Unique character elements have been added, a first for the series and a step in the direction of class-specific games such as Team Fortress. Players choose one of five unique characters at the start of a campaign or before entering into a multiplayer arena, and each individual will have unique skills and abilities.

You'll have to use stealth tactics, as the game attempts to recreate the dangers of membership in an elite Special Forces group. The U.S. Army is testing the feasibility of using a modified version of Delta Force 2 as a supplement to its Land Warrior soldier training, indicating that the game has hit at least some of its marks.

The Land Warrior program outfits soldiers with high-tech gadgetry, such as head-mounted LCD screens, giving soldiers more information about their surroundings and improving communication within a unit. In Delta Force Land Warrior, players can access similar information, in addition to wielding the experimental OICW (Objective Individual Combat Weapon), which combines a 5.56 mm rifle, a 20 mm grenade launcher, a laser range finder, and a video scope with night vision. There are 27 weapons available in all. Other new weapons include a H&K PSG-1 sniper rifle, FN MAG machine gun, AK-47, H&K G11 assault rifle, Steyr AUG with grenade launcher, Calico submachine gun, H&K UMP submachine gun, Glock 18 machine pistol, MM-1 grenade launcher, and Pancor Jackhammer automatic shotgun. There are 20 counterterrorist missions in which to perfect your use of the weapons, plus 10 additional quick missions. As many as 50 players will be able to battle over the Internet, and the game includes support of Voice-over-Net.
